Markham is trying to explain why he hasn't written in a year to Herbert. He heard about Mrs. Bailey Millard's death. He sent Mr. Millard his sympathy. Markham is writing a poem "An Hour With Desrtiny" and A Star in Water". He comments on Herbert's poem Yosemite.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
